7/18/2003 - Press Release From Senator Jeffords,I-Vt.

"The survey released today fron the ATSDR on drinking water contamination at Camp Lejeune is chilling. Based on the numbers provided in the survey, children born or conceived at Camp Lejeune from 1968-1985 had more than three times the rate of cancers and birth deformities than the general population. This fact alone begs for a broader inquiry. I call on Center for Disease Control to immediately start a full assessment of all health consequences from the highly contaminated drinking water provided at Camp Lejeune before 1985. "At a time when the Department of Defense is seeking exemptions from the enviromental laws that govern hazardous waste, we must also consider the health of the soldiers and families that serve our nation. ATSDR's "Progress Report" on it's ongoing study futher reinforces my belief in the need for strong environmental oversight at military training installations. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, I will be working with my colleagues from North Carolina and other committees of jurisdiction to ensure that the health effects of the water contamination at Camp Lejeune are fully evaluated and our soldiers and their families are properly cared for." WOW! Have we needed someone like this on our side to see that truth and justice prevail! Thank God for this man! Make sure that every congress person from each of your states gets a copy of this. Then ask them if they plan on making their voice heard as loud and strong as this great statesman from Vermont. This is what we have been waiting for folks, someone on the hill to really see what happened to us and not just shake their head in disbelief but to start the ball rolling all the way to the White House if need be,to draw attention to our plight and get us the coverage and help that is needed. Keep up the good work telling everyone that will listen and keep your heads held high. They know we're here and that we're not going anywhere. Terry
